What is a Gorilla Permit?

Gorilla Permit is a card or document issued by the wildlife authority to visitors entry into the park for gorilla trekking. In Uganda, a permit is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and in Rwanda by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) while in Congo by the Virunga Park Authorities. A permit allow visitors access into the parks to visit mountain gorillas in their natural habitations. People starting from 15 years and above are the only ones with eligibility to acquire permits and see gorillas in the wild.  Mountain gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. They also inhabit the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Congo.

Uganda Wildlife Authority Gorilla Permits

For Uganda’s case, permit is a card issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to qualify one to participate in mountain gorilla tracking  in Bwindi Impenetrable national Park or Mgahinga National Park. This permit enables a visitor to see gorillas for a one full hour even the exercise of trekking may take between 1 to 8 hours in the jungle. How Much is a gorilla permit in Rwanda? 
 A Rwanda permit for visiting gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park is at USD 1500. A permit in Rwanda used to cost USD 750 until 2017 when it was doubled to USD 1500.

Who Sells Gorilla Permits?

You must have a permit for a given date to be able to track mountain gorillas in Uganda. Uganda wildlife authority is a body that issues permits for visiting Uganda gorillas. And you need to book one way ahead of time since they are highly demanded. UWA has gorilla permits available each day for Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.  Permits for the Peak seasons that run from June to September and December to February are the most competitive ones.
