What is a Gorilla Permit?

A Gorilla Permit is a card or document issued by the wildlife authority to visitors entry into the park for gorilla trekking. In Uganda, a permit is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and in Rwanda by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) while in Congo by the Virunga Park Authorities. A permit allow visitors access into the parks to visit mountain gorillas in their natural habitations. People starting from 15 years and above are the only ones with eligibility to acquire permits and see gorillas in the wild.  Mountain gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. They also inhabit the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Congo.

A Permit in Uganda goes for USD 600. And you are at liberty to choose the sector of Bwindi where you want to trek gorillas. We do make permit booking for clients at no extra charges as longer as you have confirmed a safari with us.

Uganda Wildlife Authority Gorilla Permits

For Uganda’s case, permit is a card issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to qualify one to participate in mountain gorilla tracking  in Bwindi Impenetrable national Park or Mgahinga National Park. This permit enables a visitor to see gorillas for a one full hour even the exercise of trekking may take between 1 to 8 hours in the jungle. Without a permit, you cannot access the national parks for gorilla trekking. There are several companies that could help you secure a permit for any region in Bwindi forest or Mgahinga National Park. There are around 20 gorilla families in Bwindi forest where each group is visited by 8 tourists per  day. When you buy a permit, you are supporting the conservation efforts and the survival of Mountain gorillas in Uganda. Some of the proceeds from gorilla tourism go to the conservation campaign and also support communities that live near the parks. The Uganda permits are of two trekking categories. Ordinary Gorilla trekking and Gorilla Habituation Experience. A permit for gorilla trekking is at USD 600 whereas that for gorilla habituation experience is sold for USD 1500.
