Kahungye Gorilla Family in Rushaga Sector of Bwindi

Kahungye Gorilla FamilyKahungye Gorilla Family is a gorilla trekking group in the southern Rushaga region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Kahungye is named after Kahungye hill near where the gorilla family was found. The group was opened for trekking in October 2011. The group initially had 27 members including 3 silverbacks before one faction split off. Today Kahungye has 13 members and is headed by a dominant silverback Gwigi, which locally means “the door’. Kahungye and Oruzogo gorilla families were launched for trekking in 2011 at the same time following a thorough habituation process. In shorter time, the group split and enabled the creation of Busingye Gorilla Family.

Kahungye Gorilla Trekking 

To visit Bwindi and trek gorillas in Kahungye group, you need to make gorilla permit booking in time. Choose from some of the best gorilla trekking companies in Uganda and make your gorilla booking. A Uganda gorilla permit costs USD 600. Trips to Rushaga region may start from Kigali in Rwanda to Bwindi Impenetrable forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These parks are closer to Rwanda and only takes 4 hours to transfer from Kigali to the south or east of Bwindi forest.

Alternatively, you may begin gorilla trips to Rushaga area from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi forest. There are two transfer options here which include road and air. Road transfer from Kampala is the most common mode of transport for three days gorilla safaris. The flying option is also possible by taking flights from Entebbe to Bwindi. This is done by landing at Kisoro airstrip and transfer by road to the park.

Other Gorilla Families in Rushaga Sector Bwindi 

Rushaga gorilla trekking region of Bwindi forest has the biggest number of the gorilla families. The gorilla groups in this southern region include, Nshonji Gorilla Group, Mishaya Gorilla Group, Kahungye Gorilla Family, Busingye Gorilla Group, Rwigi Gorilla Family and Bweza Gorilla group.
