Gorilla Groups in Uganda: Uganda Gorilla Families

Gorilla Groups in Uganda that are habituated and open to gorilla trekking safari tours are about 20 in number. These Uganda gorilla families are mainly in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which has about 19 gorilla groups. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the second gorilla national park in Uganda has only one group, the Nyakagezi Group. The rest of the gorilla groups are found in Bwindi forest. The gorilla groups in Bwindi are spread across the various gorilla trekking sectors of Bwindi of the vast park. The gorilla regions of Bwindi are Buhoma sector in the northern side of the park, Ruhija sector in the eastern section, Nkuringo sector and Rushaga region in the southern segment of the park. Bwindi National Park is said have half the number of the mountain gorillas in the whole world. In the entire, mountain gorillas only live in the four national parks in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. These include Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and the vast Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.Gorilla Groups in Uganda

The Gorilla families in Uganda are the ones available for trekking by visitors from across the world. To visit any of the groups, one needs a gorilla permit which is an entry pass to the gorilla habitats. Usually after tracking gorillas, you are issued a gorilla trekking certificate, a document that confirms your trekking participation. As per Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla trekking standards, each gorilla family is allowed 8 visitors per trek. And these are further granted one hour to stay with gorillas in the wild. Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi forest takes place with all the above gorilla families. Having booked a gorilla permit for a particular tracking date, a visitor only waits to be transfered to the park. Most of the gorilla trips we organise usually start from Kigali in Rwanda to Uganda. When one flies into Rwanda to trek gorillas in Uganda, he is picked up from Kigali and transfer to either Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park gorilla trekking. A gorilla permit secured determines the route to take from Kigali. One may either gorilla through Katuna or Cyanika border post to reach Bwindi. The company organising a safari determines the routes basing on the permit for a given gorilla group.  Bwindi Gorilla trekking especially for 2 or three days may also be supplemented with community and nature tours around the park.

Nyakagezi Gorilla Family – The Only Gorilla Group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Apart from Bwindi which boasts of numerous gorilla families, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has only one gorilla group for trekking. Of the two gorilla parks in Uganda, Mgahinga has the least gorillas. To track gorillas in Mgahinga, one can easily come from Kigali in Rwanda to Uganda.
